Kit’s Pick: Pearl’s

Located in the heart of Williamsburg, Brooklyn (known also as Willyb to locals and millennials) Pearl’s is one of my new favorite dining spots. Busting with color, great food, drinks and music – this Caribbean spot is a win.

Owned by one of the partners of Sweet Chick (chicken and waffles) John Seymour – Pearl’s is located across the street on North 8th Street and Bedford Avenue. The narrow restaurant welcomes you with a small bar in the front, bright colors, a neon Pearls sign, a wall of 80’s boomboxes and a backyard seating area filled with sky blue picnic tables and Caribbean color accents.

From the drink menu, one must taste  the Frozen Rude Boy. This delectable drink, made of blended ice, ginger, lime juice and topped with dark rum it is an express ticket to a brain freeze. As for the food menu, you must try the Bake and Shark which is a Caribbean style sandwich with shark, pickled slaw and mango chutney served on a sweet and tasty bun. I also recommend the roasted corn sprinkled with toasted coconut.

No need to make a reservation – I’ve always managed to snag a table at a reasonable hour. Pearl’s is open seven days a week including brunch starting at 12 pm on weekends. Happy hour  is Monday-Friday from 2-8 pm with  half price drinks and is perhaps the best time to go because with cocktails running up to $12 a pop, it is a bargain. For a jerk chicken Caribbean restaurant the prices are a bit steep but hey – it’s in the heart of Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
